Chiropractic and Physical Therapy Policies Effective May 1

A Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma internal review revealed payments have been made for chiropractic/physical therapy services not covered under our medical policy. Effective May 1, 2009, we will no longer pay for these services.

The following services are not covered under our medical policy:

• 97012 -- Application of a modality to one or more areas, traction, mechanical

• 97014 -- Application of a modality to one or more areas, electrical stimulation (unattended)

• 97032 -- application of a modality to one or more areas; electrical stimulation (manual)

• G0283 -- electrical stimulation (unattended) to one or more areas for indication other than wound care, as part of a therapy plan of care

Members currently in a course of treatment that began in April will continue to be reimbursed for these services during a transition period of up to one month (ending May 31, 2009). Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma will not retract payments already made. The physical therapy visit limit in the member’s contract will still apply.
