National Provider Identifier (NPI)


NPI. The time is NOW!

Originally, we had published March 31, 2008, as the start date for our NPI Only phase. Some of our providers are experiencing technical difficulties preventing them from submitting NPI-only claims. Therefore, we are no longer requiring submission of NPI-only claims on March 31, 2008. We have changed our NPI-only date to May 23, 2008, to coincide with the date the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will lift its enforcement-leniency policy, and fines will begin to be imposed for non-compliance. All claims must be submitted using NPI as the single identifier. Claims received with only a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma provider number or with dual identifiers (BCBSOK provider number and NPI) will be rejected as of May 23, 2008.

If you have already received your “Congratulations” post card from BCBSOK, we strongly encourage you to take the plunge and begin submitting NPI-only electronic claims now. If you submit claims electronically and have not received your “Congratulations” postcard, please wait to receive your postcard prior to submitting NPI-only electronic claims to BCBSOK. Providers who submit paper claims exclusively and who have shared their NPI with BCBSOK may continue to submit NPI-only paper claims, without waiting for a “Congratulations” postcard.

Remember: May 23, 2008, marks the end of the dual-identifier acceptance phase at BCBSOK. As of this critical date, all claims must include only your NPI, per the federal regulation.
