Medicare Part D enrollees sign up with Blue Cross

May 3, 2006 - Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma ranks first in the Oklahoma market among more than a dozen health insurers offering more than 40 different individual prescription drug plans, according to statistics released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma has signed up 36,000 of the nearly 180,000 Oklahomans who have enrolled in the Medicare Part D individual prescription drug plans through April 27, 2006, according to CMS. The deadline to sign up is May 15.

“With 20 percent market share, we have more people enrolled in the Medicare Part D prescription drug plan than any other plan in Oklahoma,” said John Mavros, vice president, consumer markets, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma. “We want to be able to help Medicare beneficiaries in Oklahoma make informed decisions about their prescription drug coverage.”

The company has urged Oklahomans to ask questions about their current coverage and how it will be affected before signing up for Medicare Part D. The company has hosted free seminars to explain options to Medicare beneficiaries when dealing with their health insurance issues.

The CMS statistics released in April include individual prescription drug plan

members only and do not include Medicare Advantage or group members. Separately from the individual members, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma has signed up at least 2,100 Medicare-eligible Oklahomans through employer groups.

“For more than 40 years, Oklahoma’s Medicare beneficiaries have trusted Blue Cross to provide their supplemental health care coverage and now their prescription drug coverage, too,” Mavros said.

Many Medicare beneficiary plans in Oklahoma offer coverage with reduced or no deductible, according to CMS.  Other plans offer coverage that goes beyond Medicare’s coverage limits. People with Medicare in Oklahoma have a range of choices for prescription drug coverage to suit their individual needs, including plans that help save money or offer more coverage than Medicare’s standard drug benefit.
