Dr. Joe Nicholson named new medical director
Dr. Joe Nicholson has been named vice president of health care management and chief medical officer of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma. Nicholson officially assumes his role Nov. 1 when current chief medical officer, Dr. Rodney Huey, becomes president. Nicholson joined the company in 2002 as medical director for medical services.
Prior to joining Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma, Nicholson had served in staff positions at OMNI Medical Group and Utica Park Clinic, serving in a variety of leadership roles in those positions. He most recently served as a hospitalist at SouthCrest Hospital in Tulsa.
Nicholson received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Evangel College, a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Creighton University, and a doctor of osteopathy degree from the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery. He served an internship at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center and completed a residency in family medicine at the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa.
He served as a field surgeon and chief of emergency medicine at General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital and is the recipient of the Army Commendation Medal.
Nicholson has been named to 2007-08 Leadership Tulsa. He and his wife Jenna have two children, Max and Molly.
