Piedmont Students Receive Grand Prize in Tobacco-free Contest

Mar. 29, 2013

Students share their Be Smart—Don't Start message through video

Piedmont, OK — Students in Misty Granger's sixth hour class at Piedmont Intermediate School in Piedmont, Oklahoma, were selected as the grand prize winner in the ninth annual Be Smart—Don't Start Anti-Tobacco Contest. The contest is a tobacco-free initiative which provides Oklahoma elementary students the opportunity to create their own message to teach their peers about the dangers of tobacco use.

A 30-second public service announcement featuring the students will be recorded for distribution to television and radio stations, posted on multiple websites and promoted across the state.

To support the contest, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma and our community partners offered an interactive anti-tobacco curriculum at no cost to the state's elementary school students in two grade divisions, kindergarten through 2nd grade and 3rd through 5th grade.

Students then submitted their entries in either the video or visual categories. In addition to the grand prize winner, nine other classes were recognized for their efforts.
