National Walk@Lunch Day® This Wednesday

Apr. 28, 2014

Jump Start a Healthy Lifestyle

Tulsa, OK – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma is supporting the eighth annual National Walk@Lunch Day this Wednesday, April 30. National Walk@Lunch Day was established by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association in 2007 and is designed to be the first stride towards a daily walking routine.

This nationwide event encourages individuals to use their lunch break as a way to incorporate exercise into their busy schedule. On this day, employees at local businesses, state legislatures and Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies from across the country will take a step in the right direction and go for a walk at lunch. Schools can also participate by setting goals for students and teachers, and by incorporating walking into the school day to instill lifelong healthy habits.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK) employees throughout the state will get moving during lunch on Wednesday. Tulsa Headquarters employees at 1400 S. Boston Ave. will participate with a walking route around the facility and an outdoor event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

"Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma is committed to improving the health and wellness of our employees and members," said Ted Haynes, president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma. "National Walk@Lunch Day is a great way to kick off a healthy exercise routine, and we encourage everyone to find a way to take part in this event. Even small steps can make a big difference on the path toward a healthier lifestyle. As always, consult your doctor before you embark on a new exercise routine."

30 minutes of moderate exercise at least five times a week is all it takes to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, hypertension and type 2 diabetes, while also helping with weight loss, lowering cholesterol, improving bone and muscle health and preventing future health issues. A brisk walk is an easy way to accomplish this healthy amount of physical activity.
