Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma Employees Volunteer More Than 5,400 Hours In 2013

Apr. 09, 2014

2013 Social Responsibility Report Available Online

Tulsa, OK — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK) employees volunteered more than 5,400 hours at 83 Oklahoma organizations in 2013, an increase of more than 46 percent over 2012. Volunteer hours are recorded through the BCBSOK Blue Corps program, of which every employee is a member and charged with making a positive impact on their community.

Blue Corps activities in 2013 included various projects in Tulsa and Oklahoma City, including the construction of a KaBOOM! playground at the Oklahoma City-County Health Department's Northeast Regional Health and Wellness Campus in Oklahoma City. In one day, nearly 200 volunteers built the KaBOOM! playground to serve as a safe place to play for the more than 13,000 children that visit the campus each year.

One of the volunteers who took part in the KaBOOM! playground build was the 2013 BCBSOK Volunteer of the Year Tiffany Howell. Throughout the year, Tiffany volunteered more than 150 hours of her time by working with more than a dozen community partners and organizations.

"Tiffany is a great example of the personal impact that each one of us can have on our community and in the lives of those we meet every day," said Ted Haynes, president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma. "Tiffany and all of our employee volunteers exemplify our purpose and core values of integrity, respect, commitment and caring, as they carry out their daily job responsibilities and serve as the face of BCBSOK in the community."

The impact of BCBSOK volunteerism is one of several areas highlighted in the 2013 Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma Social Responsibility Report. The company's report also highlights other components of its social responsibility and community investment programs including corporate giving, diversity and inclusion, and sustainability efforts. As in the previous year, the 2013 report was produced digitally, reducing environmental impact and enabling a more dynamic presentation of community partnerships through videos and social media integration. Readers can instantly share and comment on a specific page of the report through Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter or email the entire report to friends and colleagues.
