Cowboys Legend Emmitt Smith to speak at 2010 'Champions of Health' awards

Emmitt Smith, former Dallas Cowboys running back and recent National Football League (NFL) Hall of Fame inductee, will be the keynote speaker of the 2010 Champions of Health awards, 6 p.m., Oct. 18 at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. Smith is the NFL’s all-time leading rusher and a three-time Super Bowl champion.

2010 'Champions of Health' Winners Announced

September 7, 2010

"Farm to You" has been named the 2010 Children's Health Champion and recipient of the Dr. Rodney Huey Memorial Champion of Oklahoma Health award, the highest honor of the Champions of Health awards.

Coordinated by the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service (OCES), Farm to You is an exemplary demonstration of collaboration between state agencies, commodity and community partners with the common mission of delivering research-based information and programs to help Oklahoma youth address major health concerns that affect their quality of life. These concerns include increased rates of obesity, limited physical activity, low consumption of fruits and vegetables, high prevalence of tooth decay and a high rate of tobacco use among adolescents and teens. The educational initiative is designed to increase awareness of the relationships between agriculture, food and health.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma Implements Reform Provision Early

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma has made the voluntary decision to expedite a provision of the new reform law and will allow dependents currently covered under their parent's health plan to stay on the plan until the age of 26. Instead of implementing the change on September 23, 2010, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma plans to extend the coverage May 1, 2010 — in time to benefit this spring's college graduates.

According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, more than half of youth are at risk for substance abuse if they are often stressed, bored or have too much spending money.
