Women's preventive services: Contributing to lifelong health

Women's Health

Calling all women! It's important to take care of yourself when you're sick, but it's equally important when you're healthy. Regular physicals, immunizations, and health screenings are among preventive services that can help you avoid many illnesses or reduce the severity of medical problems.

Under the new federal health care law, you may be eligible for these and other preventive services – all covered with no cost-sharing. In other words, you won't pay deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance.

Recently, more preventive services for women were added to those that may be covered by your insurance benefits without cost-sharing. They include "well-woman" visits, gestational diabetes screenings, HPV testing, counseling/screening for HIV, and coverage for contraceptive methods/counseling.

Some benefit plans are exempt from the requirement that they cover services without cost-sharing, so be sure to check your benefit plan before scheduling a doctor's visit. You can also talk to your employer's Human Resource or benefits team.
