1.    What is Medicare?
a. Medicare is federally funded health insurance for people aged 65 and over or people younger than 65 who meet special criteria such as certain disabilities.
b. Medicare is health insurance that all Americans receive, regardless of age.
2.    Who is eligible?
a. Medicare is available for anyone, at any age, who needs it.
b. Generally, Medicare is available for people who are ages 65 and older, under age 65 with certain disabilities, and any age with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant).
3.    When should I apply?
a. You should apply for Medicare about three months prior to your 65th birthday.
b. You should apply for Medicare two years before turning 65.
4.    What is Medicare Part A?
a. Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) helps cover inpatient care in hospitals. This includes critical access hospitals and inpatient rehabilitation facilities. It also helps cover hospice care, home health care and post-hospital skilled nursing facilities (not custodial or long-term care).
b. Medicare Part A covers all hospital care, including long-term care.
5.    What is Medicare Part B?
a. Medicare Part B helps cover things that are not medically-necessary, such as cosmetic surgery.
b. Medicare Part B (medical insurance) helps cover medically-necessary services like doctors’ services, outpatient care and other medical services. Part B also covers some preventive services, including a one-time "Welcome to Medicare" physical exam.
6.    How does a Medicare Advantage plan work?
a. Medicare Part C is commonly referred to as a Medicare Advantage Plan. Medicare Part C is optional and provides Part A and Part B coverage. It is offered by private companies.
b. Medicare Part C is mandatory Medicare coverage.
7.    What is Medicare Part D?
a. Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage for only Part C recipients.
b. Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage with traditional Medicare (Part A and Part B), or in combination with a Medicare supplement plan. To get access to Medicare prescription drug coverage, you must join a plan that is offered by a private insurance company.
8.    What is a Medicare supplement plan?
a. Medicare supplement plans are an alternative to Medicare and cover everything that Medicare covers.
b. Medicare pays for many of your health care services and supplies, but it doesn’t pay for all your health care costs. Medicare supplement plans ("Medigap" plans), such as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma’s Plan65, were created to cover these gaps and help pay your share of the costs of services not covered by Medicare.
9.    Why do I need a Medicare supplement plan?
a. I don’t need a Medicare supplement plan because Medicare will pay for all my health care needs.
b. While Medicare is designed to help you with your health care expenses, it does not provide you with complete coverage. Medicare won’t be enough to handle all your health care needs.
