Notice Regarding Physician Standby Services

August 15, 2013

Effective Aug. 15, 2013, physician standby services are not eligible for benefit coverage.

Physician standby services are defined as professional physician services requested by another physician and generally involve prolonged physician attendance without direct (face to face) contact with the patient. For example, physician standby services may include operative standby or services for cesarean/high risk delivery, among other things.

These services are considered an integral part of hospital services and therefore the physician is not allowed to bill the patient and/or member for this type of service.  If direct contact with the patient occurs, the service that is actually provided such as an evaluation and management service, or surgical procedure would be billed.
