Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma Announces 2017 Volunteer of the Year

Tulsa, Okla.—Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK) is proud to announce Pam VanMeter as the 2017 employee Volunteer of the Year. VanMeter began her career with BCBSOK in 1998 with the Medicare group and currently serves as unit manager for Government Programs Division, Financial Support.

“Pam’s volunteerism and dedication to our community exemplifies the spirit of our Blue Corps employee volunteer group,” said BCBSOK President Ted Haynes. “I’m honored to be able to recognize Pam as this year’s winner.”

VanMeter, a native of Arkansas, joined the BCBSOK employee group, Blue Corps, as an opportunity to volunteer in the community and meet new coworkers outside of her direct team. Today, she is a leader of Tulsa’s Blue Corps Steering Committee, which serves as BCBSOK’s internal organization to coordinate and promote employee volunteer events, fundraisers, donation drives and individual engagement in the community. VanMeter is also a Blue Corps Ambassador, a group composed of BCBSOK employees who advocate for volunteerism and coordinate events in their local offices.

“Blue Corps not only opened the door to create lasting friendships, but also introduced me to several nonprofit organizations and the impact they have on the community,” said VanMeter.

In 2017, VanMeter has logged more than 120 volunteer hours with multiple nonprofit organizations in Tulsa. Several organizations she regularly supports include the Salvation Army, LIFE Senior Services, Clarehouse, Tulsa Quilts for Kids, Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). As part of receiving the 2017 Volunteer of the Year Award, VanMeter has selected Life Senior Services to receive a $1,000 donation from BCBSOK.

“I believe seniors are one of the most underserved and often forgotten populations in our community,” VanMeter said. “LIFE Senior Services directly helps more than 28,000 Tulsa-area seniors and their families each year,” VanMeter says. “Having quality services for the elderly is a need that continues to grow each year.”

Outside of work and her volunteer efforts, VanMeter is active in the Tulsa running community. Her latest dedication is being with two young grandchildren with plans to make volunteering a family affair in the future.
