Latimer County General Hospital No Longer Participating in BCBSOK Networks

Sep. 03, 2018

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK) recently learned that EmpowerHMS (Empower) has been managing Latimer County General Hospital (Latimer) in Wilburton. Empower and its owners have been the subject of recent media reports and legal proceedings that allege abusive and fraudulent practices while operating hospitals in multiple states. Therefore, we have made the difficult decision to allow our network participation agreement with Latimer to expire on Aug. 31, 2018.

This means that as of Sept.1, 2018, Latimer no longer participates in our Blue TraditionalSM, Blue Choice PPOSM, Blue Preferred PPOSM, BlueLincs HMO, Blue Advantage PPOSM and Blue Plan65 SelectSM networks. However, our agreement includes a 120-day transition period to protect our members and allow them time to move their care. Therefore, Latimer will continue to see our members at in-network rates through Dec. 29, 2018.

Members in the Wilburton area still have in-network access to several area hospitals, including McAlester Regional Health Center and Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center. Members can visit Provider Finder® to locate a new hospital in their area. They can log in to Blue Access for MembersSM for personalized search results based on their health plan and network. Members can also call the Customer Service number on their member ID card for assistance.

PPO and Blue Plan65 Select Members

  • As of Dec. 30, 2018, Latimer will be out-of-network.
  • Members have the right to seek care at any hospital they choose.
  • Out-of-pocket costs will be higher if members use a hospital or facility that is not in our networks.
  • Nonemergency services will be paid at the out-of-network benefit level.
  • Emergency services will be paid at the in-network benefit level.

HMO Members

  • As of Dec. 30, 2018, Latimer will be out-of-network.

  • Emergency services will be paid at the in-network benefit level.

All Members

  • As of Dec. 30, 2018, benefit payments for care at Latimer will be made directly to members. It will be the members’ responsibility to pay the hospital.
