In 2012, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK) collaborated with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and other payers to offer Oklahoma-based primary care practices an opportunity to participate in the Comprehensive Primary Care (CPC) initiative. This initiative encouraged doctors over the course of four years to transform the way they practice, focusing on collaboration between other practices and improving patient health outcomes. Oklahoma was one of seven regions to participate in the initiative. There were 55 BCBSOK practices based in Northeast Oklahoma.
On Dec. 31, 2016 CPC came to a successful conclusion. The results were positive enough to prompt CMS to introduce the Comprehensive Primary Care Plus (CPC +) model. CPC+ integrates many insights from the CPC initiative, including the critical role of practice readiness, aligned payment reform, actionable performance-based incentives and robust data sharing. CPC+ is in 14 regions in the U.S. Including 174 practices in Oklahoma with more than 720 providers. In Oklahoma this five-year multi-payer program will be implemented on April 1, 2017.
Another initiative BCBSOK is working toward to help enhance CPC+ collaboration is the deployment of the Clinical Data Exchange. Through this program providers will be able to deliver safer and more efficient health care through the secure exchange of clinical data. The exchange of clinical data will be done through MyHealth, a nonprofit Health Information Exchange. The exchange will help providers be more efficient in diagnostic, treatment and care management decisions across the state.
These programs are just a few initiatives BCBSOK is doing to make the health care system work better – focusing on improving health care delivery for all members.
